Beach Party Raises Funds for Scholarships

The Prince William Sound Community College Annual Scholarship Fundraiser brought over 120 people to a beach party this past Saturday. The Valdez Civic Center ballrooms were festooned with palm trees, surf boards, and even a volcano. Leis adorned every neck and tiki torches lit up the night as community members gathered to support our students at the event of the season. This year’s theme: beach party!

Each year, the staff, students, and faculty at PWSCC host an event that includes live music, provided this year by local band Future Babes, a silent auction, outcry auction, raffles, cash bar, and catered dinner. A tasty Hawaiian-inspired meal was catered by The Fat Mermaid. The bidding wars were fierce for treasures great and small, donated by many individuals and organizations. The atmosphere was a welcome respite from the snow outside, as guests arrived wearing sandals, sarongs, Hawaiian shirts, and other beach attire.

Interim President Chris Washko presented a welcoming address touching on the importance of our community’s support. Student Government President Tatiana Topping expressed gratitude for all the opportunities she and other students have available through PWSCC and the City of Valdez. The formation of a special scholarship was announced, honoring the late Stan Stephens for his support of the college through many years. The City of Valdez was also honored for its generous amount of financial support and collaboration since the founding of PWSCC in 1978.

Mistress of ceremonies, Gianna Giusti-McCune, and auctioneer, Michael Holcombe, took the stage, and bid paddles flashed. Among the big ticket items this year were: a football signed by Russell Wilson, glacier cruises donated by Stan Stephens Wildlife Cruises, several pieces of expertly framed artwork, and a vasectomy donated by Dr. John Cullen.

Prince William Sound Community College would like to thank the organizations and individuals who donated items, bought tickets, and bid high and often to support student scholarships. PWSCC thanks the students, staff, and faculty who worked hard to make this event possible. With your help, we will continue to provide a quality, affordable education to all.
