In addition to low tuition and no out-of-state student fees, Prince William Sound Community College offers a full range of financial aid resources to help you pay for your education. Whether you need scholarships, grants, loans or on-campus jobs, we are here to help!

PWSCC Scholarships

Prince William Sound Community College offers a generous number of scholarships to both new and returning students.

  • Name of Award: 2009 High School Graduate: Valdez High School, Cordova High School, Glennallen High School, Kenny Lake High School, Slana High School (For previous year graduates from any of these five high schools.)
    • Amount of Award: $1500 per semester
    • Awarded: Per Semester
    • Application Deadlines: Fall–July 15 Spring–Nov 15
    • Requirements to Maintain: Successfully complete 12 semester hours with a minimum GPA of 2.50. (Note: Disciplinary Infraction–First Offense will result in a 50% loss of award. Second Offense of the same nature–Entire Award will be forfeited.)
  • Name of Award: PWSCC Scholarship for New Students (International Students ineligible to apply.)
    • Amount of Award: Varies ($250–$500–$750–$1,000 per semester)
    • Awarded: Per Semester
    • Application Deadlines: Fall–July 15 Spring–Nov 15
    • Requirements to Maintain: Successfully complete 12 semester hours with a minimum GPA of 2.50. (Note: Disciplinary Infraction–First Offense will result in a 50% loss of award. Second Offense of the same nature–Entire Award will be forfeited.)
  • Name of Award: PWSCC Scholarship for Returning Students (All eligible students are encouraged to apply.)
    • Amount of Award: Varies ($250–$500–$750–$1,000 per semester)
    • Awarded:M Per Semester
    • Application Deadlines: Fall–May 1 Spring–Nov 15
    • Requirements to Maintain: Successfully complete 12 semester hours with a minimum GPA of 2.50. (Note: Disciplinary Infraction–First Offense will result in a 50% loss of award. Second Offense of the same nature–Entire Award will be forfeited.)
  • Name of Award: GED Scholarship
    • Amount of Award: Varies: ($250–$500 per semester)
    • Awarded: Per Semester
    • Application Deadlines: Fall–May 1 Spring–Nov 15
    • Requirements to Apply: The recipient must have completed their GED within the past 12 months. The recipient must be admitted into a University of Alaska/PWSCC Degree or certificate program. The recipient must enroll in at least 3 credits per semester.
    • Requirements to Maintain: Successfully complete 3–6 semester hours with a minimum GPA of 2.50. (Note: Disciplinary Infraction–First Offense will result in a 50% loss of award. Second Offense of the same nature–Entire Award will be forfeited.)

General Requirements

In order to qualify for a PWSCC Scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Complete the scholarship application.
  2. Letter of reference from past or current teacher, employer, or other appropriate source.
  3. Complete the application essay.
  4. Admission into a PWSCC Degree or Certificate Program.
  5. Enroll in a minimum of fifteen (15) credits. (Exceptions made for those not on a traditional two year track.)
  6. Submit a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Application Essay

Scholarship candidates are required to compose a one page essay for review by the Selection Committee. The document should discuss: (1) your personal strategy for academic success and (2) how the college experience will impact your life.

Scholarship Requirements

  • Must be a High School graduate or GED recipient.
  • High School and transfer students must have graduated with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and submit an official high school transcript.
  • For a continuing scholarship, a student must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and meet general requirements.

Application Deadline

Scholarship applications for the Fall semester must be returned to the Department of Student Services by July 15. Scholarship applications for the Spring semester must be returned to the Department of Student Services by November 1.

USDA Grant application requirements:

  • Complete the grant application
  • Submit a letter of reference from past or current teacher, employer, or other applicable source.
  • Include an essay referencing several immediate issues faced by your local community food bank and indicate an initial interest in one or two issues. Participants will not be required to adhere to this initial indication of interest; rather, these selections will be used to assess general areas of student interest and may be used as starting points for academic advising.
  • Must be a high school graduate or GED recipient.
  • High school students and transfer students must have graduated with a GPA of 2.0 or higher and submit an official school transcript.
  • For a continuing Grant, a student must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher and meet the requirements of the Grant. The applicant must also be in good standing with the university.
  • Submit the student aid report (SAR) which will be proof that you have filed for your FAFSA.
  • Be eligible for admission to Prince William Sound Community College.
  • Completion of either a telephonic or in person interview with the selection committee.
  • Preference given to Native Alaskan/Native American applicants.
  • Deadline for application is August 1, 2009

    USDA Grant participation requirements:

  • Enrollment in a prescribed core of courses (College Success Skills, Wellness, etc…) and will meet with an academic tutor on a weekly basis.
  • Meet on a weekly basis with the Native Student Services Coordinator and participate in the PWSCC Multicultural Club.
  • Must produce a brochure/flyer/poster which reflects the impact of academic approaches that address community issues.

    USDA Grant Benefits:

  • Full tuition and fees for up to two semesters. (12-15 credits per semester)
  • Students who choose to come to the Valdez campus will be housed in the residence halls, while students who choose to attend school in Cordova or at the Copper Basin campus will be provided with a housing stipend equivalent to the cost of residence hall living.
  • Textbooks provided
