Posted on: January 24th, 2014 by dlbickley No Comments

The PWSCC Valdez Archery Club will be hosting its 4th Annual Vegas in Valdez Archery Festival & Tournament, February 13-16 at the Valdez Civic Center. The Vegas in Valdez Shoot is already one of the largest indoor archery tournaments in Alaska, attracting novice to professional level archers from around the state. Inspired by the famous World Archery Festival in Las Vegas, this is the perfect opportunity for Alaskan archers to experience the traditional 3-spot, 20-yard “Vegas Round.” Last year’s event was recognized in the US and International Archer Magazine, published and distributed worldwide. This year, the full four-day event will include a two-day competition, archery clinic, archery trade show, and several fun shoots. Attendance in 2014 is expected to reach 100 competing archers.

Register for the Tournament on or before February 7 to receive a free Valdez Community Coupon Book and exclusive Early Registration drawing entry. Healthier You Program Late Registration Ongoing

Posted on: January 21st, 2014 by dlbickley No Comments

The Healthier You program kicked off on January 26, and had more people sign up for it on the first day than signed up the entire previous year. This free program runs for 12 weeks, January through April, and provides participants with weekly activities, weight loss tracking, and smoke free days tracking. Healthier You is open to participants age 5 years and older. Families are encouraged to participate together and form a healthy lifestyle together. Participants can form teams which create workout groups that often outlast the length of the program.

Each week HY offers a special sponsored activity for the community free of charge. These activities range from sample workouts to health and wellness educational opportunities. Participants can also take advantage of free biometric screening, offered at the beginning and end of the program, as well as special one-time HY events such as clothing swaps, health coach workshops, and a 5K race.

It’s not too late to sign up. Late Registration runs through January 31 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Valdez Civic Center. The following week, people will still be able to sign up at PWSCC’s Health & Fitness Center until February 8. Once people have signed up, they then create an on-line account at www.healthieryouvaldez.com to track their progress.

Healthier You is about making lifestyle changes towards a healthier you and a healthier community.  Healthier You participants earn points for their weight loss, physical activities and smoke free days. Recognition is given to the top point earners, as well all participants that meet certain point thresh holds are entered into Grand Prize, Second Chance, and Over 25 Under 100 Prize drawings. Returning participants that meet maintained weight loss criteria are entered into the K-TWO (Keeping the Weight Off) Prize drawing.

This program is made available for a generous grant from the Sound Wellness Alliance Network (SWAN), a community-inspired endeavor and is focused on creating health and wellness for all residents. Funding for SWAN initiatives is made possible by a grant from Providence Health & Services Alaska. Providence is serious about developing sustainable health and wellness programs in the communities it serves.

This Valdez Parks and Recreation program is co-sponsored by PWSCC, which provides support through the Health & Fitness Center, including staff time, providing a weigh-in center, and classes. The Health & Fitness Center also offers free personal training services through Healthier You. Call Sarah Histand at 834-1686 for more information on Healthier You.
