Admission to a degree or certificate program is not required to register for classes at PWSCC. Registration does not imply formal admission to degree programs. Steps necessary for formal admission to a degree or certificate program:
Non-Degree Seeking StudentsIndividuals in this category are not currently seeking a PWSCC certificate or degree. Non-degree seeking students need only satisfy course prerequisites to register in courses. Non-degree seeking students do not qualify for financial aid or immigration status. High School Non-GraduatesIndividuals 18 years of age and over who do not have a high school diploma or GED may still enroll in classes and may be admitted to associate and certificate programs under the open enrollment policy once assessment and advisement have taken place. Interested persons should contact an advisor at their local campus. An advisor reviews the individual's background, provides an opportunity for assessment, and determines the appropriate entry level of instruction. International StudentsPWSCC welcomes students from other countries. International students with Permanent Resident or Immigrant visas may enroll under the open enrollment option or through formal admission. Individuals wanting to apply for the International Student Form I-20A must be formally admitted to degree-seeking status. Individuals with other visa types are advised to contact the Admission and Records Office. An international student requesting issuance of an I-20 form for an F-1 (student) visa, must meet the following requirements:
The process of applying for admission takes considerable time; it is recommended that a foreign student apply well in advance of the semester in which they plan to enroll. Course PlacementAppropriate course placement is an essential component of academic success. Students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor prior to registration to discuss educational goals, placement scores, and course prerequisites for appropriate course selection. Accuplacer English, reading, and math placement tests are administered in the Student Services area. If registering for the first time in English or math courses, students must show evidence of appropriate placement. English, Preparatory English and math courses require appropriate placement scores for course registration. Test scores reflect national norms and are subject to change. For English and math course placement purposes, Accuplacer scores are valid for two years from the date taken. Refer to this catalog and the class schedule for specific course prerequisites and placement score requirements. Resident CreditResident credit is defined as credit earned in formal classroom instruction, directed study, and independent study offered by PWSCC. Other resident credit includes University of Alaska correspondence study, and all forms of UA distance delivered curriculum. In general, credit earned at UAA, UAF, and UAS is not considered resident credit at PWSCC. However, if a program is delivered cooperatively with UAA, UAF, or UAS, credit from each participating institution will be counted toward fulfillment of residency requirements. All other courses are defined as non-resident, including out of state correspondence courses, transfer courses, non-traditional courses, and courses completed for credit by examination.ResidencyAll students pay in-state tuition at PWSCC.Biographic/Demographic InformationPrince William Sound Community College must comply with state and Federal reporting requirements and therefore requires that students provide specific biographic or demographic information on registration or admission forms.
