Human Service & Disability Services
PWSCC, in cooperation with the University of Alaska Anchorage College of Health and Social Welfare, offers course work in both an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Human Services and a Bachelor of Human Services Practitioner’s Degree. In collaboration with The Center for Human Development – we offer the Certificate, OE, and AAS in Disability Services. Disability Services allows graduates to work professionally in human service areas serving special needs populations.
Employing a multidisciplinary approach, the program provides students with a conceptual and skill foundation suitable for successful Human Services practice in both urban and rural settings. The program also offers specialized areas in alcohol and substance abuse, disabilities, diversity issues, or family and youth services.
The Catalog lists in detail the requirements for these degrees. Please see the current catalog for more information, it is available under the Academics link on thepwscc.edu website. In addition, go to the Academic Programs link on thepwscc.edu homepage under Academics, in order to download the checklist for the emphasis area you are interested in studying. These checklists outline the courses you will need to complete in order to graduate with an A.A.S. degree and indicate which courses have prerequisites so that you can better plan your schedule.
For a complete listing of the prerequisites required for the AAS in Disability Services HUMS295A: Human Services Practicum I, which you will take through the Center for Human Development, please see the link on this page which will give you a list of those courses. For Human Services students, the prerequisites are listed in the Catalog.
If you decide that you would like to pursue a degree in either Human Services or Disability Services, your academic Advisor will be Toni LaFranchi, the Program Coordinator for these programs. In order to enroll for either program, you must enroll with PWSCC, the instructions for doing this are found on the home page at www.pwscc.edu.
If you are interested in the Disability Services program, in addition to enrolling at PWSCC, you must also contact Dr. Kassier at The Center for Human Development to request enrollment materials. She will send you a packet of forms to complete once she gets your name and address.
The General Education Requirement courses for these degrees are available through PWSCC in both in-class format as well as online format, specifically for those who do not live in Valdez, Copper River Basin, or Cordova. The Disability Services program is designed to fit the needs of students who are currently working full-time and who live anywhere in Alaska. The Center for Human Development schedules and provides the courses that are directly related to Disability Services via eLive over the internet. They are offered evenings, designed to work around your busy schedule, and you will be able to attend from home or anywhere you have access to a computer and the internet, but they do meet as a class together one evening a week during their scheduled meeting times. Since the Disability Services program is designed to meet the needs of working people with families, it generally takes more than two years to complete this degree as the courses are offered on a rotating schedule and not every semester.
